This painting was inspired by the decorative walls and mosaic surfaces found throughout historic Mediterranean and European architecture. A vibrant mosaic border frames an ornamental panel that appears to emerge through layers of weathered plaster, giving the impression of a preserved architectural fragment uncovered over time. The rich gold, ochre, terracotta, and cream palette was chosen to fill a space with warmth, creating the same inviting glow as sunlight washing across an old stone wall.
Built using acrylic, stucco, and charcoal, the surface is layered, distressed, and sanded back to create a naturally aged patina. Areas of erosion are intentional, allowing portions of the ornament to remain visible while others fade beneath textured layers. The piece reflects my fascination with the way history adds beauty to architecture, materials, and the stories they carry.
